Communications market

The Finnish communications market is characterised by rapidly increasing data traffic. The growth in the total number of computers and third-generation mobile phones is reflected in the total number of broadband connections.

At the end of 2010, Finland had a total of 8.4 million mobile communications connections and 1.3 million fixed line telephone connections.

The total number of broadband connections was 3.2 million at the end of 2010. The number of connections increased by 722,000 during the year. The growth is explained by the increase in the number of mobile broadband connections.

By European standards, the Finnish telecommunications market is small, advanced and competitive. Key companies include TeliaSonera Finland Oyj, Elisa Oyj, DNA Oy and the Finnet group, which consists of locally operating telephone companies, as well as Digita Oy.
